In 1977, the law on Architecture created the Conseils dArchitecture dUrbanisme et de lEnvironnement, and allowed each departemental assembly to set up their own CAUE.
The purpose of those structures is to provide free advisory services to private individuals and to the locals communities, intending to build, plan or transform a space, as well as to develop peoples awareness, including children, about the issues of architecture, town planning and environment.
Each CAUE has a technical team composed of architects, town planners, lanscap architects, geographers, ecologists.

The CAUE advise mayors and and their municipal councils to schedule the reorganization or development of their commune.

Through visits, exercices, and games scale models..., school children are encouraged to look at their surroundings, their own cities or houses, gaining an understanding of architecture, urban spaces environment, and landscape.
